2011 Story 93

Whoops, one more Wold-Newton connected story I forgot to mention in the last post:

93. The Vanishing Devil by Win Scott Eckert, from Tales of the Shadowmen, Volume 1: The Modern Babylon. "Devil" is Win Eckert's short sequel to the classic Guy D'Armen French pulp novel Doctor Ardan: City of Gold And Lepers, which was translated and reissued a few years back by J.M. and Randy Lofficier. I have, but have not read, the original novel. It is commonly accepted among Wold-Newton fans that D'Armen's Doctor Ardan and Doctor Natas are actually Lester Dent's Doc Savage and Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu thinly disguised. Eckert walks that "wink wink nudge nudge" line very well in this story, using the French character names but making sure there's no doubt who you're really reading about.  As usual with a Win Eckert story, there are a dozen cameo appearances by other pulp era characters for you to try to spot, and the story closes a hole in Wold-Newton continuity you might not have realized even existed (that is, if you're paying attention and you know anything about your secondary Marvel Comics characters of the 1970s). A fun ride.
