2014 Story 328

I forgot to include this is the last post. This might be the final story entry for 2014, but we'll see. There are a couple of shorts I keep eyeing and thinking, "well, I could squeeze one or two more in by the end of the year..."

238. SKIN IN THE GAME by Sabrina Vourvoulias on Tor.com, December 3, 2014.    It's no secret that Sabrina Vourvoulias is one of my favorite writers, and it gives me great joy that Tor has given her a potential wider audience by featuring her on the site with this story (and I believe with another story in 2015). Identity is at the heart of everything Sabrina writes -- self-identity, the identity others create for us based on what they know or don't know, cultural identity(ies), and what happens when all of these collide. In this story, Sabrina introduces us to Officer Jimena Villagran, who patrols the area of Philly were the zombies and the ghosts mingle with folks who are neither. Officer Villagran has a secret of her own that threatens to come to light thanks to a recent murder. Vourvoulias spools out the threads of the murder mystery and Villagran's secret with great dexterity, and also introduces us to a Philadelphia where the supernatural layers over the mundane. It's a lot for one story to juggle, but the author makes it work in such a way that I absolutely want to see more of Jimena, of her friends, and of this world. Great character building, great pacing, and great world-building. Why are you still reading this review when you could be reading the story?

Whooops! I thought I'd told you. (I think I also forgot to tell Daniel I reviewed his latest Tor.com short in this same community, last week...)
