2014 Story 11

From the January/February 2014 issue of ANALOG: Science Fiction and Fact (now on stands):

11. THIS IS AS I WISH TO BE RESTORED by Christie Yant    Yant gives us an unlikely/unrequited love story set in the future.  The main character is a man who has spent the past few decades working for a cryogenics company, maintaining people who were frozen before they could die and have been in stasis for what sounds like, from context clues, at least a century.  And he's fallen in love with one of the Frozen. To say more would give away some plot twists. So I'll say this: Yant's choice of detail (what to include and what to leave out) is what gives the story such strong emotional depth in such a short space (not quite four printed pages) despite the story set-up being such a trope. And it's the emotional impact that made me want to re-read this story a couple of times, which I did.
