2013 Story 33

33. NO PLACE LIKE HOME by Seanan McGuire

I love stories that take place in an action-based book franchise but in which no real action occurs. For the first time in three Jonathan Healy - Frances Brown stories, there's no creature hell-bent on destroying them, no Cryptids hunting them down. And yet, this may be Fran's toughest adventure yet, as she meets the people she doesn't yet know will become her in-laws. And yet, on some intrinsic level she must know (and this is, in my humble opinion, where McGuire is masterful with this story) because she spends most of the story stuttering in front of Enid and embarrassed in front of Alexander.  What makes this story exciting, despite a lack of physical action, is the emotional rollercoaster Fran is on through-out, and the reader's interest in exactly how Fran will reach the decision she reaches.  This is another great bit of world-building for the InCryptid-verse, showing us what it's like to be an outsider come into the craziness of the Healy (and later Price) clan.

And hey ... any time spent with the Aeslin Mice is time well-spent, yes?
