2013 Story 31

31. I INHALE THE CITY, THE CITY EXHALES ME by Douglas F. Warrick from Dark Faith Invocations. The anthology concludes with a story about ... well, a lot of things, I think. There's the necessary separation of work and personal space, and what happens when one bleeds into the other without our intent. There's the belief in the personality of cities, and the question of whether the city influences us or we influence the city. There's the concept of art as power, and how art influences life and vice versa. There's a lot going on in the story, some of it (like neon signs coming to life and running across Osaka) pretty surreal. I felt like there was almost too much going on for a short story and that perhaps this should have been a novella instead. There's some wonderful descriptive word-play by Warrick in the story, but I think the "big picture" themes got in the way of me connecting with the main character.
