2013 Story 11

11. PROMETHEUS POSSESSED by Matt Cardin, from Dark Faith Invocations.  I felt a little lost at the start of this, although I admit I admire the swooping establishing-host cinematic feel of it. I wasn't sure I'd enjoy the story because of how vast the first page and a half are (interestingly, this is the same problem I had with the film adaptation of Les Miserables .. I felt the vastness of the opening shot removed me from connecting with the characters).  However, I am a sucker for The Exorcist and its ilk, and once Cardin has introduced us to Brother Frank and the problem facing him (or not, at first), I connected with the story. Of course, I saw what was happening before Brother Frank did, but I think the author intends that. The tension mounts very well throughout, and the payoff, which puts that huge establishing-shot opening in context, was worth the wait. I actually could see this one as a short film.
