2013 Story 7

7. THE WHITE PHOENIX FEATHER by Mary Robinette Kowal, from issue three of Fireside Magazine. Full disclosure: I backed the Kickstarter for this issue, and my reward was to be Tuckerized into Mary's story as one of the lead characters. That being said ... man, did I love this. The Anthony Cardno of this story is an obnoxious, overbearing, classless actor on a future world where the greatest dining delicacy is called "the white phoenix feather." The catch is, retrieving the feather involves being attacked by indigenous species intent on retrieving the feather for their own purposes.  It's "extreme dining." The story is by turns funny and exciting, and because it takes place in a fine dining establishment, Mary gets to trot out her knowledge of food and drink. Sadly, one thing I have in common with the character named after me is that I know next to nothing about proper food and wine combinations.

And while we're discussing tuckerizations and Fireside -- if you didn't back the Fireside Kickstarter, you can still buy the book through places like Weightless Books in pretty much every ebook format. Great stories in all three issues.

Along with Christie Yant and Damien Walters Grintalis, Mary has graciously granted me reprint rights for this story in an anthology I'm putting together to raise funds for cancer research. More information about that as the project comes together.
