2013 Short Story #2

2. IN THE TALL GRASS by Stephen King and Joe Hill, serialized in Esquire's June/July and August 2012 issues  Not the first collaboration of the father-son writing duo, but a strong one that shows off the best of both author's skills, in my opinion. The beginning is classic King: a pair (in the case siblings, not lovers) traversing the midwest by car encounter a strange field (this time tall grass, not corn) where something is not quite right. The suspense builds, and the second half is effectively gory. I read this over dinner, and that might have been a mistake in retrospect, because the story is tense and nauseating (as much from the way the characters' physical disorientation manifests as from the actually bloody scenes).  Well worth seeking out.
