Stories 42- 53

These lovlies come from the pen of A. L. Kennedy in a short story collection entitled What Becomes, Anansi Press, Toronto,2010. It was originally published in the UK in 2009.

42. "What Becomes"
43. "Wasps"
44. "Edinburgh"
45. "Saturday Tea Time"
46. "Confectioner's Gold"
47. "Whole Family with Young Children Devastated"
48" As God Made Us"
49."Marriage"
50. "Story of My Life"
51. "Sympathy"
52. "Another"
53. "Vanish"

The way this writer sees the world is quite unusual. For me it often takes a handful of say three stories to get into the pacing of a short story writer. This is good writing. This is really good writing.

# 48 is about lads with limbs blown off by war trying to continue a life despite their losses and how one person can steal from them the little time time in the day when they forget they have parts missing. The whole story is so believable and as a reader that one person, while I wanted to reach into the pages and slap her upside the head and wonder how she could be so absolutely clueless at how little awareness of the larger picture of life outside her narrow window/lens.

#44 demonstrates how people who are barely noticed get together with other people barely noticed and how it becomes obvious that one is more invisible than the other.

#47 At first I thought it was about how an extramarital affair gets exposed and leads to mass murder/suicide...but I was so wrong. Or was I only partly wrong?

#49. Yikes. An people wonder why I cringe at the thought of marriage. The pace of this story was perfection.

I'm going to have to look this one up! Sounds like an interesting mash of stories. Another to add to my list of "must finds."
