2009 Stories 167 - 170

From the Spring 2009 issue of Zoetrope: All-Story, dubbed "The Latin American Issue," layout design by Guillermo Del Toro, edited (and perhaps translated by, it's not really clear) Daniel Alarcon and Diego Trelles Paz.  The issue is bilingual: all the stories in English, then in Spanish.

167. The Conductor's Daughter by Carolina Sanin (from Colombia)  Translated by Janet Hendrickson. Passengers trapped on a train going far between stops thanks to the actions of the conductor's young daughter.  There was one character whose presence in the story I did not understand.  There's an overwhelming feeling of despair lying under the passengers' hopefulness.

168. Insular Menu by Ronaldo Menendez (from Cuba).  Translated by Janet Hendrickson. This one did not work for me, but that could be because I was not in the right frame of mind to be challenged by the fractured timeline and experimental style of the story.  It revolves around food for body and soul.

169. At The Table by Ines Bortagaray (from Uruguay)  Translated by Idra Novey. I'm not sure what to make of this one either.  It's very short, and is set at a family meal.  Not clear if the narrator is an adult, a child, or a child-like adult ... and determining that actually has an affect on how I feel about the story.  Is something untoward going on or not?

170. The Harvest by Patricio Pron (from Argentina)  translated by Janet Hendrickson.  Can redemption be found south of the border, or do old habits rise up?  This is the first of the stories that deals with United States' cultural "invasion" of South American culture.

Edited this to include the Translator's names, which I somehow missed the first time around.
