Story 125

Last one from the August 2008 issue of Realms of Fantasy magazine:

Story 125: "Ours To Fight For" by Jim C. Hines.  Another story that strives to be controversial.  This one has the feel of being a "testing of the waters" for a longer work.  The setting is Detroit in wartime -- the feel is sort of WW2-ish, with Detroit being blitzed by enemy aircraft.  However that aircraft comes from a Europe under the heel of The Erlkonig -- the King of the Elves.  The story focuses on one mother and son and a bad situation regarding their neighbors, but you can tell a lot has gone into the setting up of this world.  I wouldn't be surprised to see a novel out in the near future.  The author capably evokes what it would be like to live in London during the Blitz but with an enemy who is almost inscrutable; he also really gets that sense of "how well do I know the people around me," that wartime paranoia.

I like the sound of that very much. Fingers crossed for a novel!

I think it would be a very interesting world to see explored. The feel of the story reminded me, in a very vague way, of David Brin and Scott Hampton's "The Life Eaters" graphic novel.
