ss 31. "Canadian Experience"- Austin Clarke. It was of course a joy to read some of the earlier work of a writer who has written a book in my top books list... The Polished Hoe . This short story was bleak but the human emotions that people with white privilege never consider about people on the margins is right their before our eyes when reading. The "actress" living across the hall from the main character is so intensely rendered by Clarke.

ss 32. "Obasan"- Joy Kogawa. It is actually an excerpt from her novel of the same name. Ah, the ravages of time.

ss. 33. "How Are You?"- Marilu Mallet. Heartbreaking and eye opening. A story of adults enrolled in an ESL program. It is long hard work to learn successfully but to attempt when you are in a new country, learning a new language, and coming from a world where you were abused to live in near squalor in a new place....it would be downright close to impossible.

ss. 34. "Blossom" - Dionne Brand. If you know this writer's work and sensibility you will be ready for the ride of this ramped up piece of good writing. It is also a great read when you want a character to take hold of her life and bring herself into the world. I love people getting their power and purpose...so much so that I crave it in fictional characters also.

You know, I will be in the Toronto area from Weds afternoon until Sunday morning. There are bound to be bookshops near the hotel I'm going to be in; perhaps I'll find this collection while I'm up there. Seems like an interesting mix of stories.

I am sure there will be used bookstores
the cover is mostly red with some black. It is copyrighted as the very early '90's.
