2016 Story 19

Today's story comes from the anthology Candle in the Attic Window, edited by Sylvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R. Stiles:

19. ELIZABETH ON THE ISLAND by Joshua Reynolds.  This is a very fast moving, claustrophobic story about an amnesiac woman, a dilapidated house on an island, a secret, and a mysterious visitor. I feel like I could read the story multiple times and each time find another nuance I'd missed. Knowing the author's other work, I would also not be surprised to discover that this story has links to previously published work in the gothic suspense and pulp magazine arenas; Reynolds is great at weaving in little winks and nods. He's also great at creating a sense of place that is immediate and arresting, as evidenced by this story.
