2016 Story 15

Today's story comes from the anthology Ghost In The Cogs: Steam-Powered Ghost Stories, edited by Scott Gable & C. Dombrowski

15. CITY OF SPIRITS by Christopher Paul Carey.  This is a nice departure from what I'm accustomed to seeing from Christopher Paul Carey, showing that his range and ability to pull a reader in extends beyond the great pulp adventure fiction he's more well-known for (his collaboration with Philip Jose Farmer and the subsequent authorized sequels, all taking place in the ancient world of Opar). In a steampunk alternate Earth where national boundaries are drawn on very different lines, Meteora comes to the island city-nation of Nininger with a secret mission that may affect the outcome of the war threatening to rage across the world. Carey doesn't do a ton of info-dump about the world or the main characters (Meteora, Mister Boisgilbert) and the parceling out of world- and character-building increases the story tension and reader interest. I'd love to see more set in this world.
