2016 Story 8

Today's story comes from the January 2016 issue of Lightspeed Magazine:

8. La Lune T'attend by Peter S. Beagle.  Arcineaux and Garrigue are the oldest of friends, having moved from the bayous to the city together, meeting their wives and raising families and generally trying to put their past behind them. Which works fine until the day a man they thought long dead, Duplessis, comes calling and wreaks havok on their calm, ordered lives. It doesn't help that Arcineaux and Garrigue have anothersecret they have long kept from their wives and children: they are werewolves. Beagle introduces the werewolf aspect quickly, and the conflict with Duplessis within the first couple of pages, and then he spools out the story, past influencing present, at a pace that is neither rushed nor slow and which allows for a deep wealth of characterization for the main characters and the supporting cast.

I also realized upon reading this that I've read precious little Beagle -- not even The Last Unicorn, which I really need to remedy one of these days.
