2015 Story 299

Today’s story comes from the audiobook Metatropolis: Green Space, the final volume in the series, edited by Jay Lake:

299. GREEN AND DYING by Elizabeth Bear.  Three corporate spies-for-hire (Jack, Kirii and Fade) infiltrate the autonomous ship-nation Seastead Long to steal a genome with the capability to easily feed the world as natural resources gain sentience and fight for their own rights. But all is not as it seems on the Seastead or with the genome. This is a really great little thriller that stands alone very well without the reader/listener needing to be familiar with the rest of the Metatropolis world or history. Bear keeps upping the complications and the repercussions throughout, and the story never feels overcrowded or rushed.
