2015 Story 43

From the March 2015 issue of Lightspeed magazine, edited by John Joseph Adams:

43. THE NEW ATLANTIS by Ursula K. LeGuin     In a dark dystopian future, a violist and her scientist boyfriend, newly released from a prison, meet with other friends to discuss the creation of a new power source that would solve much of the world's energy problems, while rumors circulate of continents rising from the ocean floor.  LeGuin heightens the story's tension by alternating POV between the violinist (who wants to understand the science but doesn't) and a conscioussness in the city rising from the ocean's depths. At first this is a little disconcerting, but by the story's end the two threads thematically connect and bring the story to a solid conclusion.
