2014 Story 129

From One Story magazine Issue 191, published April 15, 2014

129. CLAIRE, THE WHOLE WORLD by Jonathan Durbin   The narrator of Durbin's tale is a man obsessed with the acting abilities of his girlfriend. The story starts with, and is interspersed with, his analyses of how compelling her work in certain commercials (beginning with a Burger King spot). The whole piece is an effective look at how two people can come unraveled over time as one's career catches fire and the other's doesn't ... but also as one starts to believe the hype/cliched mantras of the business while the other starts to see how hollow so much of it is.  The narrator sees what he thought he wanted slipping away, and begins to reassess himself, and probably comes away the better person of the two based on two small encounters in the wilds outside of LA.
