2014 Story 118

From the May, 2014 issue of Lightspeed Magazine, edited by John Joseph Adams:

118. A TANK ONLY FEARS TWO THINGS by Seth Dickinson   In an alternate Earth's present, a new neurosurgery allows Russian veterans to move past their PTSD, but at what cost?  Dickinson capably sets us into the mind of a woman who did not fight on the front lines, but who did work on the supply chain near those front lines and who suffers from PTSD just as severly for never having fired a gun. In a growing friendship/relationship with another female vet, she feels she must be the strong one and takes the new neurosurgery.  There's strong dramatic tension and great character work in this short but effective story.
