2014 Story 113

From The End is Nigh, edited by John Joseph Adams

The End is Nigh is an anthology of “pre-apocalyptic” fiction, for lack of a better term. The stories presented all take place just before an apocalyptic event, and the authors continue exploring their worlds during and post apocalypse in the upcoming anthologies The End Is Now and The End Has Come.

113. AGENTS UNKNOWN by David Wellington

CDC agents investigate a disease of unknown vector that turns people into mindless animals. Of the stories I’ve read so far in the anthology, this is the most cinematical-thriller like; I can picture Matt Damon or Jeremy Renner navigating this case, trying to track down the start, and eventually the cure, before the disease overwhelms all of humanity. Even with the knowledge that all of the stories in The End Is Nigh are the start of trilogies in the authors’ worlds, this is the story that has felt the most like a novel excerpt rather than a complete standalone story with links to other stories.
