2014 Story 111

From The End is Nigh, edited by John Joseph Adams

The End is Nigh is an anthology of “pre-apocalyptic” fiction, for lack of a better term. The stories presented all take place just before an apocalyptic event, and the authors continue exploring their worlds during and post apocalypse in the upcoming anthologies The End Is Now and The End Has Come.

111. SPORES by Seanan McGuire

McGuire’s focal character is an obsessive-compulsive lab technician with a degree that would allow her to head up actual projects at the pharma/agricultural firm where she’s employed if her OCD wasn’t so overwhelming.   The first person narration, as is usual from McGuire, is strong and pulls the reader into not only the plot but the main character’s head-space; her OCD behaviors are recognizable and believable, not exaggerated for comic effect. Things begin to unravel when she comes home to discover a strange new mold growing on fruit that is clearly too fresh to be moldy. The tension heightens throughout; the reader can see the danger before the narrator does. (Side-note: I’m surprised this story isn’t under McGuire’s “Mira Grant” byline, since it has more of the flavor of her NEWSFLESH and PARASITOLOGY novels than it does the urban fantasy she publishes under her real name.)
