2014 Story 97

From Titan Books' Tales of the Wold Newton Universe, edited by Win Scott Eckert and Christoper Paul Carey

97. INTO TIME'S ABYSS by John Allen Small  Farmer's "stand-alone" novel Time's Last Gift, which introduces us to the time-traveler John Gribardsun, is recognized as a prequel to his Khokarsa pre-history series.  Gribardsun survives the novel and is immortal, becoming the Khokarsan "deity" Sahindar, among other identities. But at the end of TLG (the acronym gives you a hint to Gribardsun's real identity), Gribardsun witnesses his past self depart on that same time travel mission, and Farmer leaves it open-ended as to what happens to this second crew, who for various time-whimey, wibbley-wobbly, fixed-point-in-tiime reasons (thanks, Doctor Who) cannot follow the original mission's path through time.  John Allen Small posits what became of that "second" Gribardsun and crew ... and gives us a solid alternate history / parallel Earth story with sci-fi and fantasy elements in equal measure. An enjoyable read.
