2014 Story 94

From Titan Books' Tales of the Wold Newton Universe, edited by Win Scott Eckert and Christoper Paul Carey

94. SKINBURN by Philip Jose Farmer  This story focuses on another semi-obscure member of the Wold Newton Family (at least, obscure to those who have not read Farmer's Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life): Kent Lane, the son of The Shadow and Margo Lane.  Farmer introduced the character in the Wold Newton Family Tree long before writing this story, and definitely long before DC Comics introduced various sons of The Shadow and Doc Savage to carry on their legacies, and in personality at least Kent is true to his parents: headstrong, intuitive, not afraid to charge in where angels fear to tread. In typical Farmer fashion, this is a mash-up of genres, part noir detective story and part sf of the "developing artificial intelligence could doom humanity" strain. I enjoyed it.
