2014 Story 77

From Fierce Family, edited by Bart R. Leib, published by Crossed Genres:

77. GROWTH by A.C. Buchanan   Another staple of the colonization story is the effect the environment has on the colonists (in contrast to yesterday's story by Layla Lawlor which approached the effect the colonizers have on the indigenous population).  A.C. Buchanan gives us a story that is part SF, part horror and fully effective. The teenage member of a colonizing family had allergies back on Earth, and so doesn't think much of encountering new allergies on the colony world. The mystery of what's really going on forms the crux of the story, and that mystery is spooled out to a nice conclusion, but I still felt like there was more the story wanted to do, more it could have been. The trans* main character has a wonderful voice throughout, and I wanted to explore more of the world through their eyes. The final beat of the story feels a little rushed and slightly preachy compared to the rest of the story.
