2014 Story 72

From the March 2014 issue of Lightspeed Magazine:

72. THE LUCKY STRIKE by Kim Stanley Robinson  This alternate history novella looks at how the bombing of Hiroshima might have played out if the Enola Gay had not been able to make the run. The crew of The Lucky Strike gets the nod instead. Captain Frank January is the bomber on the Lucky Strike, and through him Robinson explores every nuance of the conflict between moral ground and following orders. January is a fully-realized focal character, even if some of the others come across as stereotypes The action feels a little slow to start but the tension during the bombing run and the events that follow is palpable.  As with several stories in this particular issue of Lightspeed, the "speculative fiction" aspect is somewhat secondary; it's present as part of the world- and character-building, but is not the main thrust of the story.
