2014 Story 69

From the March 2014 issue of Lightspeed Magazine:

69. A DRINK FOR TEDDY FORD by Robert Jackson Bennett   In Bennett's Gatsby-ish fantasy, a heartbroken man is convinced to attend a lavish New Years Eve masquerade party during which he meets a tall stranger who mixes him a special cocktail. In the course of collecting the ingredients, the secrets of Teddy Ford's fellow party-goers are revealed to him and he weighs them against the source of his own heart-ache. Bennett capably melds 1920s excess with later wartime melancholy, and main character's reaction to the behavior of his fellows is believable. The fantasy elements are more effective for their subtlety.
