2014 Story 35

From Lightspeed Magazine's February issue (#45), edited by John Joseph Adams

35. FIREBORN by Robert Charles Wilson  On a world that (I think) is Earth long after an apocalypse of some kind, two Commoners (Onyx and Jasper) get caught up in the intrigues and power-plays of two of the long-lived Fireborn (Anna Tingri Five and Dawa). Romantic and societal intrigue and back-stabbing are the order of the day, and the question seems to be: in an effort to get out of their boring small town, did these two young friends get in over their heads?  Although the characters, especially Onyx, are well-drawn, I didn't feel connected to them. And while the action (especially the sky-dancing) is also well-described, I felt like I was removed from all of it.  Not my favorite story in the issue, but your mileage may vary.
